The most current theory is that the Big Bang was caused by 2 colliding Branes.

It is not possible to know what caused the big bang because as you trace events backwards in time when you get to plank time after the big bang, basically all the laws of physics break down. Therefore, there is no set of laws to apply to what was happening at the moment of the big bang, let alone before it happened. So you see, you cannot deduce what caused it. You can speculate, theorize and imagine what it was but there is no way to actually know.

We're not sure yet, but we have a lot of theories, and some of them are testable, or will be soon. Look up Brane theory and M-theory. Remember, just because we don't have an answer now doesn't mean we won't someday. Hey, 10 years ago we didn't even know how old the universe was!

What do you think it looked like when God created the universe? It looked like a big bang. Awesome beyond imagination.
