I think we were poor to hear my mother talk, but we never new that. We got what we wanted, had a nice vacation to the beach for two weeks, my family had a lake house. Now that I think about it I wasn't poor at all. I was rich, I had a close family and great friends growing up. I had my maternal grandfather and my paternal grandmother, and a great grandmother until I was 23... Yes I was very well off!

We were poor in monetary ways, but rich in family and friends. One cousin used to say that "We were so poor, we couldn't even pay attention". We had no TV, no phone, no indoor plumbing, and our only transportation was the old farm truck. We raised everything we ate, and I can remember butchering steers and hogs in the barn so we would have meat for the winter. I can remember a neighbor man who always took us to the Shriner's Christmas Party. I just thought he was being nice, but in later years I found out the party was so underprivileged kids could get Christmas presents.
