Round-up or other spray weed killers should work. I use Eliminator Weed and Grass killer. It takes about a week to work but it's been well over a month and nothing is growing back.

I've never had good luck with defoliants ridding an area of weeds that quickly.
When I clean my pool deck I use a power washer. In some spots there is plant life growing through the cracks. I focus the power washer spray onto the crack and it blasts the weeds away, root and all, almost instantly.
