It depends on how you define "state". The state of Israel started in 1948. But, there was a "nation of Israel" (a collection of tribes that lived in the area), 4000 years ago. Palestine isn't a state. But, most maps of the area in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries show it as Palestine, part of the Ottoman Empire.

No,there wasn't any state called Israel before 1948...
Guess some people have some problems with accepting the truth...
Unlike what BobbyR says that land was inhabited by Arabs and I think that denying the existence of the Palestinian population on that land before Jews came should be consider a crime, just like denying the Holocaust...We shouldn't deny history...

Not in the modern sense of the word "state" or "country".
In Biblical times, yes, there was an independant Jewish country of Israel.
For the record, there was never a state of Palestine either before 1948.

It's been called Israel for the last 3000+ years. This is not an Israel site but it is owned by Jews and they have a tendency to not like BS being spread about Israel
The whole region was deemed palestine by the Romans first then by the British after the fall of the Ottoman Empire but it was never officially named palestine.

In addition to what Holbrook said, the land was uninhabited and unowned due to the fall of the Ottoman empire, after WW1 it was deemed by the League of Nations to be used as a home for refugee Jews. The British were supposed to administer that, but they turned a blind eye when Arab allies illegally snuck in and inhabited the land. These illegal squatters became the people who claimed to be Palestinians and owners of the land.

Yes. It was founded thousands of years ago, and the Jews founded the city of Jerusalem in the state of Israel.
But there never was a country called "palestine" at ANY time in history.
Of course, the question is bogus. Was there a state called "poland" 100 years ago? (no)
There are a lot of countries today that did not exist 50, 100 years ago.

Funny how the people living there called that land "Palestine" but according to some of the geography experts such a place never existed.
Just because western nations chose to ignore their soverignity doesn't mean that the state of Palestine did not exist.

No. Becareful what you say about Israel, the pro Israel lobby is VERY powerful. I am not saying that's good. In truth, the only nation that was wiped out off the map was Palestine.
