It's got like 140 character classes you can choose from and several races you can be. It's true 3-d graphics (Check out the screenshots here: http://www.rubiesofeventide.com/screenshots.html )
and is FREE to play!
Not like FLYFF or rapplez where if you want to progress you have to buy things out of their store with real money.. there's no hidden agenda, it's actually free.
And the graphics are much better than the other games I've tried like runescape and maplestory. Some people are easy to please I guess.. they play those :)
Anyway.. there is also several different types of crafting and mining, etc. Lots to do and places to explore. It's a reall fun game.
There aren't a bunch of idiots on it either .. well, depending on the server you choose anyway (the "anything goes" servers are just that) since there are constantly GMs online that moderate the chat, etc.
It's free, give it a try and have fun!

Ultima Online for pay to play. As for free MMORPG, right now my favorite is FallenSword. I like this game cause of it's guild system that stimulates interaction, cause of it's stamina restrictions - that allow players that don't have much time to remain competitive -, and the lottery and the auction mechanisms that are also very original.
I'll also give you a link for the "List of free MMORPGs" on wikipedia, where you can see the available games out there. Some of the games are really good (Anarchy Online, Trickster Online, Maple Story...). Take a look at the websites and check the screenshots, maybe you'll find some that interest you.

Wan Mei2 aka Perfect World Online.
A f2p fantasy mmorpg with little grinding. A Chinese clone of world of warcraft with lineage 2 graphics. This is absolutely the best f2p mmorpg ever!! You can take over cities, fly , swim, get your own house, do quest that gives more exp then hunting, fly on swords, and make out with foxes underwater!

The English version of this game will be released somewhere during summer. Philippine version is English but they have a IP block of anyone that isn't Philippine. Malaysia is suppose to release a Eng version with no IP block somewhere during summer as well

Check out the ranking at MMOsite.com and MMORPG.com, still I can not tell ya what's the best but you can use the chart as your reference. Personally I would say WoW, becuz of the populated.
