Yes, sometimes the useful answer to my question has been a combination of responses. In cases where more than one response contribute equally to answering my question, I pick the earliest of those answers.
From the point of view of a person answering (because I answer way more than I ask), I look at the "best answer" and points as more of a game than anything else. I don't feel particularly hurt because my answer was not picked: if I feel I have contributed to the discussion I am perfectly happy. It really doesn't add anything to my life that I have more or less points - although the competitive part of my nature does make me look at the 8% and when I get chosen for a "best answer" - I look to see if it has brought me up to 9% yet. But that's all in fun.
- I get just as much fun at spell-checking my longer answers and getting a "done" sign without having found any mistakes. - That certainly is not a regular happening! LOL

Yes. I think you should be able to give 5 points to second place. Or you choose best answer and then put to a vote and if a different answer is choosen than the 1 you picked they should get 5 or if it's the same the best answer could get bonus points.

Absolutely. Sometimes when I am voting for answers I feel bad that I can't vote for more than one in a certain category.

Also, I have a friend who gives great answers and so when he answers my questions, I generally send it to a vote - I do vote for his answer but I feel that by allowing others to vote it will cancel my bias in case I'm only picking him because I always think his answers are best.

Yes. I either let other people vote, or try to pick the best one and give props to everyone else.
