to do this correctly you need to make a mark at 90 degrees to the staircase treads use a builders square or corner of s quare board place against treads at bottom of stair mark up the side of square onto wall repeat at top tread you now have 1 mark at bottom tread on wall at 90 degrees to stair and 1 mark at top tread on wall at 90 degrees to stair use spirit level against front nosing at bottom of stair measure up this line 900 mm repeat at top nosing pull a chalk line between these 2 marks measure up your 2 90 degree lines to get the line parallel to the stair not as hard as it reads get a cup of tea sit next to your stair and think it through good luck

depending on how old the house new regs are that the handrail should be positioned at 900mm from the front edge of the tread nosing ! mark the wall where possible 900mm up from the front of the stair tread come in at least 4 inches on the first and the last bracket join the lines previously marked from the nosing and then ideally put the brackets equal distance from each other if you have winders you may have to cut the hand rail and have horizontal sections !

The best way to do this is:
Use a spirit level to get a straight line up the wall from the string (wood against the wall).
Measure up this line the desired height, and then repeat for the top.
Measure the distance between the top and bottom marks and divide by three. This will give you the distance between each bracket (assuming you have 4 brackets)
Measure up from the stair string on these marks and you should have a straight diaganol line.
Have fun
