Steinbrenner still has it in for Winfield. He might have been the best all-around player George has ever had, but the fact that Number 31 has been given out to lesser players, sometimes much lesser players, since and no Plaque put in Monument Park says a lot. And it says a lot more about George than it does about Dave. The fact that Derek Jeter, whom George says he loves, has Dave as his baseball idol should carry some weight, but I guess it doesn't. It took a long time for George ex-targets Yogi Berra and Reggie Jackson to receive their true due from him. We may have to wait until George shuffles off this mortal coil, and for whoever takes control of the team then (son Hank? son Hal? somebody else?) to properly honor Dave. (To be fair, though one of the players who got 31 was Tim Raines, who should join Dave in the Hall of Fame, though he was a Yankee too briefly to get a number retirement or a Plaque.)

Steinbrenner hated Dave Winfield. He actually called Winfield "Mr. May" because of his poor performance in the playoffs. Even if others were considering retiring his number, there's no way George would stand for it.

Why? Dave Winfield really doesn't have the numbers to have his number retired. Don't get me wrong, his total career numbers are very good, but he really wasn't a Yankee for that long. You can't retire every number. There are numerous Yankee's with better numbers and their numbers aren't retired.

Because as good a player as Winfield was, he was no Ruth, Gerhig, Mantle, or Dimaggio. Not even in the same ballpark... figuratively speaking.
