I note that a lot of your answers nominate Winston Churchill. I have recently become aware of an interesting fact concerning him.
Remember Sadaam was executed for gassing Iraqis. Who first advocated this? Churchill. On 29 March 1919 he ordered:
'Gas bombs are required by the 31st Wing for use against recalcitrant Arabs.'
Lieutenant Colonel Gossage worried about the effects on the innocent.
Churchill:
'I do not understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisonous gas against uncivilised tribes.'
He wanted to arouse in the local population what he called 'a lively terror'.
The reason it was not used was because at the time we had not yet evolved suitable and practical gas bombs for use from aircraft.

You need to be a historian to answer this one! In the average lifespan not too many can remember further back than Thatcher, both she and Blair were in charge for far too long!

For someone like Churchill, today it is only looked on as hearsay by the younger generation.

Clement Attlee - ran Britain during the Second World War (Churchill was the de facto President, running the war and international issues) and introduced the seminal 1944 Education Act. After becoming PM in 1945 he created the National Health Service.

Winston Churchill was great during WW2.
He did not do a good job during the following years when he was re-elected. He had great difficulty in getting to grips with the reality of the faltering economy and was out of touch. However he did see the soviet menace coming when Roosevelt did not.
Beyond him there is no comaprison with Mrs Thatcher.

I am not a full blooded Brit but a 1/5 blood. The Britt have had two great P:Ms. First was Sir Winston. He was so good The US made him a honorary citizen. next was Maggy. Mrs. Thatcher took no guff from anybody.she could make a lot of male world leaders fear to cross her. We need some one in this country like her but Hillery is not Maggy. Hillery is a wimp compared to her.Tony was like her, that's how he became PM. That is the opinion of a 1/5 Britt.

Churchill...hands down. He warned about Hitler for years and was all but removed from government service for it.

He also understood what Stalin was going to do after the war.

Most politicians are wrong in their predictions....Churchill was RIGHT !!!
