I don't know that I agree with your basic premise actually.
I think respect is freely given. At least I do. It's sort of like self worth to me.
Each person I work with I respect because they're contributing something.
From there though, what convinces it to grow is conviction and the way they carry themselves over time. I'm not one quick to judge. No one is perfect. Actions dictate where it leads.

When someone is honest, real and shows me the same respect, they have mine. It has to be mutual. I'm not going to give respect to anyone that doesn't respect me.

Being sincere and honest. Another example is when somebody lights up with emotion when you first meet them. I think it is a key ingredient for a successful relationship. A person has to be likable before they can be loved.

I start out respecting everyone and then if they are honest and kind in return the respect remains.
