Disk cleanup normally only list the files in the recycle bin, or in temporary directories such as the Internet cache or the temp folder used for software installs. Because the Internet files or install files can have any extention type, there is no "don't delete .xxx files" rule. You are correct that if it has a recognizable data format extension (such as doc, xls, etc) then you may want ot double check. But to date I have not seen Disk Cleanup take out anything that it shouldn't have done - unless you are someone who puts "real" files in the "temp" directory - which I have seen people do.

ccleaner.com
Very thorough program. You can select what will and will not be deleted.
It will not crash the PC. Let it run even if it takes a long time. I just worked on a PC and it deleted 1 Gig of junk that was slowing down the PC.
Always run Check Disk once a month. after a defrag.
Happy deleting

yup,
most of the files on desktop are shortcuts(lest you have advertenly created some of them). Rest of the files are system and deletion is not feasible for them. so don't you worry, in case even it gets deleted you can alway recover it using some erasing tools.

Take care
Bye
