When I start my car, it makes a very loud squealing noise when I turn to the right, but only for the first minute or two the car is started. I don't get the noise again until the next day. Any ideas of what this could be? This has been happening for the past week or so. I have an appointment with the shop Friday, but I'd like some preparation for what I may be facing...thanks for any help!

Little hard to say.....which means it could either be a few $$ or tons of money to fix. It also depends where the squealing is coming from, and how new or old your car is.

If it's more in the engine, then the power steering pump might be wearing out. When you turn the steering wheel, the steering pump works so that steering is made much easier, pumping fluid or oil. If the pump is wearing out, then when you turn the steering wheel, the pump can actually squeal.

But since you mention it happening only when turning right, I hope it's not what I think. But if it is, it should be grinding, not squealing. I've always had trouble with all my cars, that eventually, the right wheel starts to go bad, the bearings start going bad, and causes a scraping noise when you turn only to the right. But if caught early, it's not too bad to get fixed.

But since the way you describe it, loud squealing for first minute or two, it might be just a belt. Sometimes, when the car is first started, the belt squeals because it isn't tight enough. As the car warms up, so does the belt, and then it stops squealing. Simple fixes are: just tightening the belt, adjusting the parts holding the belt. If the belt seems fairly tight, there is a spray from Walmart or auto parts stores called "belt-tight" or "no slip", which helps the belt to grip so it won't squeal.

I hope that you know or trust the shop you're taking car to, so they don't mess you over. Good luck!!
