Not a gift as such, put perhaps a formal thankyou note with photo of your son & them if possible (framed would be nice).

You don't have to. The honor of choosing them as your son's godparents is gift enough. If you can afford something tangible that represents the day go for it.

I gave the godparents an enlarged photo of them and my son in a nice frame after the event.

You do not have to, but it is well-appreciated. I recommend a well-thought gift basket and a nice card expressing your gratitude. It really does not have to be that expensive, you can fill up the gift basket from things in the dollar store, but just make it seem that it is well-thought out.
