Dollar turtles used to be sold in the United States, until they were associated with Salmonellosis in small children. Many reptiles carry some salmonella. (Salmonella is also common in raw poultry and raw eggs.) If kept observing proper hygiene, that is not a problem. But children would put the turtles in their mouth, and a number became sick. Once the government outlawed the sale of turtles under 4 inches size, reptile-associated Salmonellosis decreased dramatically.

It is LEGAL to keep baby turtles.
It is LEGAL to give away, adopt, breed, and keep baby turtles.
It is ILLEGAL to sell baby turtles commercially for pets.

So where can you buy one? Better luck catching one at the lake with a net.

As far as the eating problem? Try feeder fish. I had a turtle before and he would eat 36 feeder fish a week. Didn't eat much shelf "turtle food".

If your turtle is very young (it should not be because it is illegal to sell them that young) it may still be living of the yolk. if not it may not be eating because it is still adjusting to the new environment (stressed turtles often won't eat). try putting some food in and leaving, as your turtle may be more comfortable eating when you are not there. also check the correct temperature (water[for aquatic turtles] and basking site) for your turtle. turtles won't eat if they are too cold. if your turtle goes more then a week without eating you should consult a herp vet

When your turtles not eating that means hes sick. I had 2 turtles i bought at petco and they died. They weren't eating and couple weeks later they died. My mom bought me new baby turtles and there happy and healthy and there eating fine, but one did not eat for a couple weeks, and i thought he/she was going to die, but i gave it time and he/she got better. If your really worried take it to the reptile vet. I don't think you can get baby turtles in Louisiana. But you can order them online. Just google it. Put baby red eared slider turtles and there's this website where you can purchase them. Do you have all the supplies?

Um if you can't get the first one to eat unless the pet store tells you they get lonely without another one and that is a possible reason for him not eating- please don't buy another one until you can fix that problem. You should be able to buy them at Petsmart or Petco... But I dont live in LA so I dont know

If your turtle won't eat you should take it to the vet because he could be really sick!!!
TAKE HIM TO THE VET A.S.A.P.!!!!!!!
