Its simple Goto Device Manager( Click right button on my computer then click Properties then Click on Hardwares then click on device manager)
Now look at Other Devices..if on its right there is a + sign click on it..u will see some yellow question marks.....Double Click on Multimedia Audio Controller...Click on reinstall driver ....CLick OK ....if ur system is able to find the driver well and good....else search for some generic drivers for it by giving the details of the mother boad etc on net...all are free.....if u have a CD of your motherboard then check for audio driver in it ...run it........if it is not compatible with Vista search on the net....HOPE THIS IS THE PROBLEM......Please do keep speakers etc switched on while doing this...
Hope this helps....Best of luck.... :)

Immediately after a fresh OS installation, you need to load the motherboard chipset drivers and the drivers of all onboard devices. Next would be drivers of devices that you install on the Graphics port and PCI slots.
There are lots and lots of matured drivers for Win XP. The same may not yet be true for Vista. Your drivers nightmare may have just began.

Basically, audio devices work on plug-and-play method. It also depends on your comp. Make sure you plug-in your speaker in the correct slot (some computers have 3 slots). You can also try to go to device manager and repair your device or uninstall and install again. If your device requires drivers, go to the website of your device and download the required drivers.
I also switched from xp to vista but my speakers worked perfectly. Make sure your vista upgrade ran smoothly.

ok you should install your sound card driver. if its on-board you should put your motherboard CD.
many hardwares are not compatilbe with windows vista right now. try to download your soundcard driver compatibled with vista from its website. better use xp.
in xp you could update your drivers in this way :
right click on my computer > select properties > select hardware > select Device manager > right click on unkown devices and select update driver...
im not sure its the same way in vista.
