I feel that I am.
That thought requires self examination.
But how do we know if we're only being empathetic to our personal aspirations and not truly seeing ourselves objectively?

Not really, and I know that's part of my overall problem with relating to most people. It's just who I am. I don't expect anyone to be empathetic to me though, and I do alright.

Always... i trained as a counselor, and that is rule of conduct knowing how to be empathetic to others, being able to feel empathize with anothers pain, and taking on board their opinions, without being judgemental (non judgemental).

~~~ HELLo YSD. Yeah,I am very em"PATHETIC" to others. Except to bad people or meanies. I get ticked off when I read a great answer like the one manhattanmary anne wrote and I see two thumbs down by her rating thingie. Maybe those two peoples fingers jEst slipped right? I'm sure they meant to give her thumbs up. I feel her bewilderment; and like her even though I never heard of her before. Too bad I already forgot what her answer was.lol! ~~~
I used to be.
But I was taking on too many peoples problems and it was making me an emotional dumping ground for every Tom, Dick and Harry. This started to affect my own life and I became depressed.
Now I choose who to let in. I will listen, I will offer platitudes, but unless I actually care about the person, they don't get much of me.
Empathy (from the Greek εμπάθεια, "to make suffer") is commonly defined as one's ability to recognize, perceive and directly feel the emotion of another. As the states of mind, beliefs, and desires of others are intertwined with their emotions, one with empathy for another may often be able to more effectively define another's mode of thought and mood. Empathy is often characterized as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or experiencing the outlook or emotions of another being within oneself, a sort of emotional resonance. My answer is yes.
