I am willing to pull my $3000 laptop appart just to get it touch sensitive for my art

Nope. It is the hardware itself that makes a touch screen a touch screen. I will try to find a link explaining the technology behind touch-screen monitors and edit post.

Another edit: I was just checking into this for myself and found that this is only about 200 bucks. However, the following site has a very good point. Most LCD´s and laptop screens will scratch very easily if you are using the ¨pen¨ and/or fingers (nail accidents).

This feature is built into the monitor. You'll have to buy or do without.
