It is actually one political party in the U.S., with two wings and the cockpit filled with special interest groups with checkbooks open to the left and right. The party stops at nothing to assure its monopoly on political offices and it would take a storm of epic proportions to wipe the slate clean of the corruption from the local to national levels.

If political parties are irrelevant it is only to the extent that they are corrupt. As far as the American Democratic Republic goes the problem may be that there are ONLY two parties - both of which are paid for and owned by global corporate interests(Look at the polls that show how often our government overides the will of the people on virtually every major issue) . The only way to mitigate this effect is for Americans to actually vote for and monitor their representatives - to hold their feet to the fire and make them represent the interests of the people. Another would be to encourage leaders with intelligence and genuine conviction to run for office instead of purveyors of political sloganism (The Clintons or The Bushes). American voters are being divided by buzz words and controlled by hanging chads and other electoral nonsense. The American people choose their government - if it is lacking- they need look no further than their own apathy and cynicism for causes. It is not the system - it is us.

without changing the entire system of how the country is run I doubt that you'll get rid of the politicians.
I think the big problem here is that there are only really 2 parties to choose from;

1. Labour
2. Conservatives

the 3rd party Liberal Democrates never seems to compare to the 2 big boys there, always running in the 3rd spot.

If there were more parties to choose from come election time, there would be more insentive for the parties to try harder, to compete with each other.

Political Parties are a direct result of freedom of association. People in the United States can of their own free will join any organization they so choose. How can you as an American want to destroy the right to free association?
