I found the perfect product for this and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a natural carbon product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, pets, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just put a few in your trunk and also car. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and internet. Definitely worth trying

I'm not sure if you saw the mythbusters episode where they left a dead pig in a car in the heat for a while, but they found there is no way to get that out without removing the carpeting and any fabric that the smell may have attached itself to, and THEN cleaning the smell from the metal with the enzyme cleaners (they used a heavy-duty version of the natures miracle from a crime-scene cleanup company).

Before you go that route, you may want to try something that hotels and used car dealers use that mythbusters didn't try, which is to get an ozone generator and stick it in the trunk for a couple of days. Ozone has this great ability to kill smells, and maybe it will work in this case. Where do you find an ozone generator? A quick search on yahoo! will point you in the right direction. Consumer models such as the sharper image ionic breeze may work well, but the commercial-grade machines pump out like 50x more ozone and will give your poor trunk a better chance at survival. Good luck!

Here are two dry "Old Wives remedies" that might work.

I personally have never used them, but I have seen them used in old stinky refrigerators with the same problem.

Wadded up sheets of newspapers, absorb the odors and also Charcoal briquettes. It too is supposed to soak up the smell. These would be dry methods to try before going wet.

I just thought of something. My son spilled a five gallon of paint in the trunk of my car (he was a teenager) It was latex thank God. I pulled the carpeting out of the trunk and hosed it for about and hour, it took forever to get the paint out. You just pull out the buttons that pop it into the floor or sidewalls.

I work for a seed company and spilled cabbage seeds in my trunk carpeting and with dampness they started to grow. I again pulled the carpeting out of the trunk and pressure washed it with the hose.

So this might be your number one idea. Just leave that trunk open in the sun all day in the hot sun to help allow the odor to escape. The carpeting dried perfectly and looked just like new when done. They do put durable carpeting in cars.

Good Luck.

The odor is probably a bacterial funk. You've got to pull the carpet and interior trim from your trunk and clean it with Lysol, liquid- not spray. It'll have to be saturated, scrubbed, rinsed, and left to dry.

There may still be some odor since the back panel (the flat part by your back window) sits right above the trunk and can't really (easily) be pulled out for that purpose.

You have many options:
there is a few carpet products that smell like vanilla.. you empty like 3 cans in there that should half do it...

spray it with lynx for like an hour :p

get a new trunk...

get it steam cleaned

Use Vaccum Powder

umm thats all i can think of off the top of my head...

try putting baking soda in your trunk and probably the rest of your car. i would pour it right on the carpeting...you can always vacuum it out later. lots of little trees hanging from the mirror? open it up...air it out....leave the trunk open and the windows down if you can. good luck!

scrub it with a strong detergent. let it sit for a moment, rinse it all out, and leave that trunk and all car windows, open for as long as can be gotten away with.
