i installed a busted windows cd on a laptop and now it keeps restarting randomly...i had the same problem with my old computer as well..even if I format the laptop/pc the same problem still occurs...there's nothing wrong with the hardware or the fan or anything, since it was working just fine before
and i'm not sure if it's a virus since it should be gone after formattin the whole system
i'm thinking that there's something wrong with the BIOS system maybe? but i don't know how to solve it

Try to reboot into Safe mode, then run your anti-virus program. I am very confident that it is NOT a BIOS problem. This is almost always a software issue. You see, when you did the REINSTALL, you would have seen it do the formatting. When you reinstall, you should have DELETED the existing partition; then it would HAVE TO run FORMAT on the disk before installation.
If the computer runs long enough, you might be able to get Windows Updates that will fix the problem.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

busted windows cd? you mean cracked? That could be the problem, especially if its a downloaded version....often those downloaded cracked versions have hidden files embedded in them that actually harm the computer they are installed on. The other possibility is that you formatted the disc but didn't wipe the disc so the same info got rewritten to the same sectors and didn't fix anything.....when formatting a disc all it does is clear the info off the disc, and only rewrites over the same space as needed....wiping a hard drives writes zeros across the entire disc and renders it completely clean....as if there was never anything on it. The final possibility I can think of is your laptops temperature gauge for the processor may be set incorrectly or the processor fan isn't spinning, as laptops are set to shutdown when overheated, or overheating....and you may have to reset the bios to re-read the battery capacity as well as that could also cause it to shutdown if its "thinking" the battery is low on power. It could also be the power options are not setup correctly so check those too.

Go to Control Panel and click on System
Click the advanced tab
There is a Settings button by restart options
Click on this.
Now uncheck the box that says restart when error.
You now need to learn how to use the event viewer to see what errors are being generated.
Control Panel and administrator tools.

They Must be Dell's d;o)
Enter your BIOS setup screen and make sure the BIOS sees your drives or set to auto.if you don't know how to do that select restore optimal settings then make your bootup sequence has boot from cd-rom selected before HDD-0
Then Use a Windows install disk that's not broken.

Windows xp is designed to restart in an attempt to repair itself should something go awry. You will have to reload windows with a known good cd, I recommend buying a new one.
