My girlfriend wants to take the birth control shot...We have heard you need to take it within 5 days of ur period beginning...Well the situation we are in is we had unprotected sex a few days after her period ended...she took the morning after pill and started her period again a few days later but its very light and she feels like its going to end soon...she has been on her period again for about 3-4 days...should she wait until the next period to start taking the shot or can she get it now? I wasnt sure if it was safe or effective to take it now because the only reason she is on her period is because she took the morning after pill and its not her regular cycle right now...

Please reconsider the shot. It is horrible, has very bad side affects, and there are class action lawsuits against the makers of this shot for what it does to women.

I would not recommend the depo shot for anyone. I was on it for four years and am so glad I am OFF of it. There are so many negative side affects. I am much happier on the pill Kariva.

Most providers WILL NOT or should not administer the shot unless it is within the first 5 days of an actual period. She should talk to her OB/GYN or family doc at this point. Between the high dose of hormones in the morning after pill and the hormones in depo in my opionion (I am an OB/GYN nurse) she should definitely wait. As for the people speaking of "horrible" side effects, it is different for everyone. There is a right choice for birth control for everyone and if the shot will work for her then try it! Best of luck.

It depends on the doc. When I started it they just did a pregnancy test but from what I've heard the clinic I'm at now does a test and then either a week or two does another test before they will give you the shot. Everyone has different side effects so just because it was horrible for one person doesn't mean it will be for the other. I've had no side effects and didn't gain any weight

wait until her next period and her cycle will be irregular after the morning after pill because of the high dosage of hormones.

She should ask the doc., but usually there reasoning behind taking it the first five days of your period is too be sure your not pergnant. which it sounds like she's not, so they'll probably let her take it.

i heard the shots make you gain weight....so be very careful and get all the information on these birth control methods before you start thinking about using them...also use safe sex regardless b/c these methods don't protect you from stds and condoms only REDUCE the chances of them....so!
