It's essenetially just a diary. Folks put in it whatever they please or you may see them dedicated to one specific subject.
They were originally called a "Web Log" and that was converted to "Blog".
Hope this helps.

a place were people post there life a online diary basically
myspace is a good example
A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual, although some focus on art (artlog), photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), music (MP3 blog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.

There are various types of blogs, and each differs in the way content is delivered or written.
By media type
A blog comprising videos is called a vlog, one comprising links is called a linklog,[11] a site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog or one comprising photos is called a photoblog.[12] Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblelogs.
An Artlog is a form of art sharing and publishing in the format of a blog, but differentiated by the predominant use of and focus on Art work rather than text.
A rare type of blog hosted on the Gopher Protocol is known as a Phlog
By device
Blogs can also be defined by which type of device is used to compose it. A blog written by a mobile device like a mobile phone or PDA is called a moblog.

Blog = Weblog
Its basically an online diary for you to talk about things as a series of timestamped articles that people can comment on
The good thing about blogs is they are usually provided with special software that makes the creation of posts etc really easy (no HTML or web design needed)
You can get your own blog at an endless number of websites, easiest is probably Blogger
http://www.blogger.com/
This is my blog: http://blogs.herod.net/steven/

- Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or the Web site.
Who started them? I don't know exactly, but anyone can have a blog for him/herself.
Blogging services are offered usually for free. You can have your own Blog for example here:
https://www.blogger.com/start
To search for existing blogs with keywords go here:
http://blogsearch.google.com/
Hope this helps

It's shortened form for "web log", and it's nothing more than a glorified online journal. That's all there is to it. Dull isn't it?!
