Battery life on a laptop is dependant on a lot of things. If you have your screen set to full brightness and the drives set to never turn off your battery life will likely be about half of maximum.

As a battery ages it looses its ability to hold 100% capacity. They can be "conditioned" and some laptops include a utility to do just that. Charge, discharge rapidly, recharge slowly. etc.

If you keep your laptop on AC the majority of the time the battery does not get used very often the life will be limited very quickly. They need to be used and if they are only partially used then recharged they will very quickly become very short lived.

To get the most out of your battery, fully charge it, then fully use it on a regular basis. If the one in your system is more than a couple of years old or is showing signs of not charging properly replace it with a new one and use it.

if you didnt charge it for the right time when you first bought it the battery could be no good. If your laptops older the battery could be no good. Your doing things that use more power such as having a disk in.
