Yes, they can hurt. If directed at someone in a fragile state of mind (such as depression) words could mean the difference between suicide or seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
If one is supported and content with life, then "no", words cannot hurt.
We don't know what someone else's frame of mind is upon meeting them so there is something to the phrase of: "If you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all"....
So true.
This is tremendously true of parents to children. If a parent fills a child's head with lies and negativity, then that person will grow up to believe that is their worth. If a parent teaches a child to love themselves and others, the child will grow up to offer the world something in return.
Words are a lot more powerful than we give them credit.
In fact, interestingly, whilst it is never right to physically harm another person - those wounds heal but words can stay with a person for years.

Words only hurt if you let them. but sticks and stones will always hurt you. So next time you want to make fun of some one just poke them with a stick or throw a stone at there head it will hurt them a lot more.

I don't believe it. Words can hurt so much more and be just as cruel. The most hurt i've ever been has been due to words, not from "sticks and stones"

I think that phrase is a load of crap. Words can hurt ever so much more than sticks or stones.

I agree with you. Name calling you can get over, but after a blazing row with my 20 year old daughter last night, I feel like I've had my heart ripped out. I've cried all day and literally feel like I've been run over, I'm hurting that much. She knows exactly which words hurt the most.

Words are definitely the worst. Think of a verbally abusive person those words sticks on the abused forever.

in my opinion.. even if people get over the hurtful words it will always be there.. the hurting inside.. i think words do hurt at times.. and it is easier to heal a broken bone than a broken heart.

We used to say that alot when we were younger but it's not true at all. Words (or emotional abuse) do hurt and stay with you throughout your life. It really does affect people in a real deep way.

I don't know where that saying came from, but it never was true. Kids cry over things other kids say to them, adults say mean things to each other knowing it's going to hurt. If words couldn't hurt, nobody would bother saying anything mean or uncaring because it wouldn't have any affect.

You have never been severely beaten with a ball bat or hit with rocks have you?... No seriously words can hurt forever. Other wounds heal with time... Unless they are fatal... on the other hand I guess someone could hurt you so bad with words that you might kill yourself... Dang! see what you started! :)
