Buy a Ford Ka - they're reliable, simple to maintain (they have a Fiesta engine) and great fun to drive. The 1.3 engine can be a little hard going up hills (you may have to change down a gear) but you'll always be first off at the traffic lights as it's a lightweight body with a decent sized engine for its dimensions.

I have had two Ford Kas, the first was written off by my very careless husband or I am certain it would have lasted a lot longer, several more years in fact.

Now I have a SportKa with a 1.6 engine and boy does it fly. I wouldn't swap my Ka for any other car on the road for the same price. Plus, the parts are cheap so if something does go wrong, it won't cost a packet to fix.

Ford Kas rule!

Ka - best to drive, cheapest parts, or a Nissan Micra (very reliable, and UK-built unlike the others).

The Matiz has character, but isn't totally reliable, and is a bit underpowered.
The Amica lacks character, and the handling is unusual (sit in it, start the engine, keep it in neutral and turn the steering from lock to lock and you'll understand).

Out of the three you mentioned, go for a Ka.

I owned on a few years back, and they are good fun to drive, mainly due to the chassis/suspension setup. The steering is also pin-sharp.

There should be plenty of choice out there, because of the sheer number sold, which should also drive down secondhand prices.

I wouldn't normally bother with Ford (now drive Japanese motors) , but in this case, I would be concerned with the build and engineering of the Daewoo and Hyundai.

might sound silly but id go with a Kia Picanto.

Fantastic little car - had them as hire and courtesy cars many many times and have never had a fault with them.

The 1.0 or 1.1 verisons are equally good .... u have to push the engines a litlle hard to get the best outta them but they're willing little cars.

They even come with a decent JVC Cd player as standard :)

Interior is decent enough and the car even looks half decent too.

Not a patch on my MR2 Turbo but as far as small cars go - i'd stand by the picanto

All i know is i would stay away from a matiz. The cylinder head gasket went on mine after 20000 miles.

Dont buy a ford, they suck (experience!)

Buy someting like a Seat Arosa or Lupo (same car in reality) Matiz's are quite good too.

As much as i dont like the look of them Micra's are good cars too.
