There may be some excesses in our prisons and some independent study is called for, but would you change places with one of those prisoners.
And while we are talking about prisons, I understand that rape is rampant in US prisons, that also should not happen.

When someone commits a crime against other people and are found guilty they should give up their rights. I get upset when I see that prisoners are being let out to attend family functions such as funerals...They have Given Up That Right...Prison should be so austere that nobody would want to go back 'inside'. If they riot and damage the place then they should live in that squalor! They caused it so let them suffer it! It was like when the dirty protests were held by the IRA. when they smeared their cells with human excretia. They should have been made to live in it until they agreed to clean it up themselves.
There should be no contact with the outside world. They forfeited that! There should be no radio or television. They forfeited that! Prison should mean punishment and all the time that they are inside being punished, law abiding citizens can walk the streets and live in their homes in comparitive safety!
I also believe that it should not be time off for good behaviour...It should be TIME ON FOR BAD BEHAVIOUR!
The 'do-gooders' of this world have had their turn now lets punish criminals (for that is what they are!)

Prison should be a place of rehab and reform. Criminals are bad because they never got enough love/nurture/caring/attention etc.. somewhere along the line (probably as kids).

Do you think Hitler would have been such a total sicko if he had been loved and valued as a child? No, he was abused horribly. Of course this (and nothing) could NEVER make what he did OK.

But my point is, we need to become a more loving, caring human race if we are ever to abolish war, killing, crime, hate.

Let it start with you and me, here, now!

I totally agree! Prisons should be minimal sized cells with a minimal cot and a toilet. Nothing else. I have been a soldier, have fought for this country. I am now a student nurse, training to save lives and help people for a living, yet I am paid less and treated worse than these people and it p****s me off! Is it any wonder that so many people say s*d it and turn to crime?

question: isn't there a minimum and maximum security prison?

I understand your point if you are talking about maximum security prisoners, but any how, people are forgetting that in a humanitarian perspective a prison is a correctional institution.
criminal as they may be, it is still an obligation of the government and its citizens to help correct them and, somehow, help make them a better person for the society and the country.

I agree with what your saying.

I was listening to the radio only this morning and they were saying that prisons are so over populated that the minor offenders are being tagged and let out early.
I know a person that has reoffended time and time again never sent down just fined so then has to go out stealing to pay for the fine. This time recently he finally got sent down which came as a shock as i think he thought it would never happen. The family say its what needed to happen but now the prison is so full they want to tag him and let him out asap.

The 52K also pays for the physical space and the human resources to police these facilities. Payroll is a larger concern. Benefits packages for guards, etc.

16K. I'd be going back to school and increasing my earning potential rather than being worried about the penal system.

Agree,
Treatment should be basic - food, medical care and hygiene.
However...
People who commit crimes of more severity such as paedophilia or murder - should be kept separate and made to suffer worse consequences.
Criminals make innocent people suffer as a result of their actions, its time that somebody lays down the law (properly) and gives them realistic punishments.
Maybe then people will be more afraid of the thought of prison and less likely to commit crimes.

thanks
take care

To be sensible about this, prison is punishment in it,s self, but I agree they have a lot of things people who work hard can have, example, free time, which is very precious to all

I work in a prison, although a small one and i have to agree. The reason we have to even ask this question is because the aclu exists.
