i think it's your subconscious working on whatever you have going that day. i could never figure out why i would wake up several times during the night to see if it was time to get up when i had the alarm clock set.

because when you recognize that "you need it" you are likely stressed and overthinking how much you need it.
take a hot shower and drink a cup of soothing tea before you go to bed... you'll likely sleep better then.

Can't really tell you why but I know that its 110% true!
Here I am (was up at 4:30 am) and everyone is still asleep...why am I up???!!!
Maybe we have too much on our minds??

excitement worry, best to get out of bed & have a warm bath & warm glass milk sometimes it can help & forceing yourself to think of some thing that makes you happy & not what you worry about :)

your body plays tricks.try telling yourself you dont want to sleep ,you want to stay up all night,and your body will probably force you to sleep,thinking it is going against u...
