If you are being basic the answer is 3 (as 5 -2) = 3.

If you are trying to be clever, there are 5 apples and YOU TAKE 2 AWAY - so you have 2 apples !!!

You must have been in the nursery (Pre-kindergarten) then. You would have been wondering who took away the two apples. Or you would have been wondering whether all the apples are of the same size (thus you could be thinking if I take away two big apples etc.).

Figuring out that when we take out 2 out of 5 leaves 3 involves abstract thinking which develops later. As a baby, we don't have the ability to think in abstract terms.

Thanks for sharing a deligtful and educational moment of your life.

I disagree with the answer "2" - as then it should have been worded "If I have 5 apples and take away 2 apples, how many apples do I have?" . . . instead of "have LEFT". You are already claiming to "own" all five of the apples. If all five of the apples are yours - and two are taken "away", then three are "left".

the main staggering answer must be 5. clarification: The riddle says you have 5 apples and you're taking 2 away. It says you have 5 apples, so the respond must be 5. even with the undeniable fact that, my next decision could be 2 considering you took 2 away. the main staggering answer is 5 even with the undeniable fact that.

You still have 5. It says you had 5 apples and you took two away. They might not be together but you did give them away nor did someone take them.
