When operations were first carried out in hospitals, they were done in rooms where and audience could watch everything that was going on. The audience would consisit of fellow surgeons and medical students.

Because when operating was in it`s fledgling state the young trainee surgeons and doctors would sit in a raised circle around the operating surgeon and his assistance and would talk through the operating/dissection of the body,The seating was arranged in the same way as an old theatre similar to the one on the south bank that is a replica of Shakespears globe theatre.

Well, you are on the right track - it did indeed used to be a show - operation took place in a theatre where medical students, or in the early days even members of the public, could come and watch!

Originally people could go and watch the operations and it was a form of entertainment, like going to the theatre! They had a different idea of what was entertaining in those days!

Probably because medical students would come in and observe operations. Also other medical experts would come in and observe the performance of a new medical discovery or technique.

This practice goes back to when ghouls used to dig up and sell cadavers to medical people for study because using cadavers was illegal.

Interesting question.

Operating Theatres in the UK were so called because they contained a semi-circular viewing area from where medical students could watch the surgery and take notes.
