The Simpsons takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield, without any geographical coordinates or references to U.S. states that might identify what part of the country it represents. Nevertheless, fans have tried to determine the the town's location by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography, and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, the show has become intentionally deceptive in regard to Springfield's location. Commentators have suggested, and then ruled out, nearly every U.S. state and region as the basis for Springfield. Only once, in season 11, did an episode "Behind the Laughter", describe the Simpsons as a "Northern Kentucky family". However, there are many counterexamples to contradict this statement, so it acts merely as a teaser for increasingly curious fans. Groening has said that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city where he grew up. The name "Springfield" is a common one in America and appears in over half of the states. Springfield's geography, and that of its surroundings, contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, tall mountains, or whatever the story or joke requires.

Many states have been suggested and even on one of their episodes it was revealed that they lived in Kentucky. In the episode "Behind the Laughter" the narrator gives Springfield's location as northern Kentucky. For the second and some later airings, this changed to Southern Missouri. But this cannot be taken literally because this episode portrays the show not as a cartoon created by Matt Groening, but as a live-action sitcom originally written by Homer and starring his own family. None of what happens is part of the main Simpsons continuity... exactly like any Halloween Special. Oh, Springfield cannot be in Illinois because Lisa in one episode says that Springfield is no where near Chicago.

The Simpsons are based in the city of Springfield. Now where is thie Springfield?

The short answer is that Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.

Proof? No state's capital city is called "Capital City". No state has ever had this flag. No state's motto is "Not just another state". And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There is an enormous number of geographical contradictions between episodes which make it impossible for Springfield to actually exist in any real American state.

In a clip from the new movie, Homer and Bart climb a mountain and they get so high, Homer can point out the 4 states that border the state Springfield is in and they're like New Jersey, Arizona, Mississippi, etc. Early on the show suggested they're was a location, it just wasn't revealed, but as time has gone by it's become increasingly obvious there's no "real" location.

In a 2004 Austin Chronicle article, a publicist for the show comments: "Matt Groening had the Simpsons live in Springfield because it was the most common city name in the U.S. The writers 'toy' with the state location constantly, (thus) there is no specified state...."

Matt Groening said he said he set it in Springfield because that's one of the most popular cities in America. The Simpsons family are named after members of his family. And street names from where he grew up in Portland Oregon.
