Smelly New Doona/Duvet?

I recently bought a new doona (duvet to you other strange people!) from Ikea and it smells kind of funky. It's just a spare for visitors but when I pull it out the whole room smells. It's got feathery stuff inside and I have tried washing/airing/spraying with deoderant but no luck. Any suggestions on something I could use on it? Thanks heaps.

Don't get me wrong. I love Ikea. But some of their stuff isn't exactly top-notch quality. Their doonas are made of feathers and down that have only been washed once or twice before being made into pillows and doonas. They retain the odor of the duck. Better doonas are made of down that have been laundered many times, and are then odor free. Your only options are returning it and buying a btter quality one from another store (and paying twice as much) or washing it a few more times. The odor WILL eventually fade away. I had one from Ikea years ago. It smelled for months, but over time it aired out.

Your doona is not defective. All lower end down smells like that in the beginning. If you want to wash it, just make sure you dry it completely in the dryer. Don't take it out damp, it will smell worse. Once it's totally dry, hang it over a few chairs outside and let it air out.

I agree something isn't quite right if it stunk when you opened it. These days, who knows exactly what you are getting. Think I'd take it back and let them smell it even after you've wash and dried it. You can try all the suggestions but all you are doing is covering up the problem. Without getting to what inside it, the smell will keep coming back. You paid good money for it, take it back and get what you paid for!! Good luck!! Oh, by the way, it's a duvet to me!!!!

Put it in tumble dryer & add a couple of fabric sheets as well[bounce] let it go round for about ten minutes the smell is lovely.You could also put some inside the bag your'e storing it in.

I like some of the songs Ted's band did on Scrubs. Friends is such a great show, one of the few comedies where I chuckle at least once per episode no matter how many times i've seen it!! BQ: I don't know either's music:(

Have you tried Fabreeze? It works on my teenage son's blankets. Or you could try tumbling it in the dryer on low heat with some lemon peels tied in some nylon netting.

I would return it. If you read the label it was probably made in some foreign country. Gosh only knows what the stuffing is and what allergies it could cause or contribute to.

I would contact manufacturer as that sounds not quite right,BUT having washed it negates warranty then again person above who suggests fabric freshener in dryer sounds good. ♥
