I believe to a certain extent your fate is predetermined. Not by exact literal occurrences in your life, but in general terms... for example; working hard your whole life... how and which type of hard labor will be up to you... but you will have to labor to earn a living. You also have certain points in your life to change that fate, or more or less a chance to turn fate (for the better or for worse). You can avoid a fate of poverty if you really work hard. Yet a person born into a prominent family... Paris Hilton for example is destined to be in the lime light. She will never be poor, as for which example she portrays... ie. she shine as a good example or a bad example is up to her, but no matter which way she turns she will surely be in the public eye.

We like to think we are and strive to do whatever will further our destiny in the best manner. If we don't think we are then we just give up and have no hope for the future.
Along with this I have feeling that a person's destiny is dependent upon being at the right place at the right time. Sort of a question "Does man make the times or do times make the man?"
I guess we can never really be sure if we are in charge of it, the best we can hope for is that we can influence it.

William Ernest Henley. 1849–1903
Invictus
OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Yes we are. As long as we are free to make our own choices and not someones slave we are able to some extent to shape our own future and take charge of our own lives.
Your boss at work can never dictate how your life will turn out or the social associations you can have because you can easily leave his employ.
If there is a higher being then he may have some input into how our future is planned out, but ultimately the decision is ours and ours alone.
Destiny awaits, what will you do today to change it????

I think life is for living which is interpreted differently from one person to the next depending on ones norms and values. We encounter many challenges on our way to find our way. Trial and error, one door closes and another opens and one has to encounter these challenges and probably will throughout ones entire life. Life chances are different from one culture, religion, to another. Maybe its about giving more than you can get and accepting that one can without expecting anything in return, and feeling no-to ways of recieving. The saying "favour for a favour", cracks me up as people feel they are owe, or are in debt to somebody and I don't mean financially. Having a well paid Job / or the opposite doesn't necassarily mean success and gratification, health, family, friends, love, happiness, peace, safety are far more important than those who think they are a higher being. If we have this within oneself then our destiny is mapped out for us and our blueprint is set for the next generation

I always go with the flow... I could be more of a go getter I guess but I don't see the point... We live in a deterministic universe, therefore everything that will happen has already been determined so what's the point? It has already happened in a way since time is an illusion and it's not travelling forward... :P

Sometime. But most of the time we are only an audience to the madness around us. We think that our choices are wise, and at times they are. But more often then not they aren't.
This is because we are, in truth children. I don't mean we are simplistic, i mean, we hope for things to work out for the best when we know in our thoughts that the decisions we made were misguided.
Be well.

The answer is no and that is shown by your restriction to the question in the underlying paragraph. We are not in charge it is just the nuture of the human race. We survive and fight for each day. Worse we invent tougher tests and complications to everybody. The competition will continue and we will each of continue to fight both individualy and collectively.

Destiny offers chances. It's up to us to take these chances and do the best that we can in life. The more chances you take, the more chances you receive, some good, some not so good. You have to create things for yourself and fate will always lend a helping hand.... I feel lucky...

well, if i'am and with the imlementation of my life course program i can say, i'am who was a incharge of my own destiny phase of implementation. how ever with the over whelming power of others with manipulation, some trend s or bends occur resulting the sublime self to other will ,which in turn is fatal to the real program course of my own destiny.
