Well plenty of people have heard of AMD, despite what the last guy said. The E6420 has a slight performance gain over the 4800+, but the 4800+ is about $60 less. So as far as price/performance, the 4800+ would probably get the edge.
For rendering, having multiple cores is really the way to go. I would seriously suggest that if it is at all possible you wait a few months, by then the Intel quad cores will have lowered in price, and the AMD quad cores will be out. Since rendering is a multithreaded application, a quad core will give you almost double the performance of a dual core. That is the way to go.

The Core 2 Duo is much faster than AMD period. Intel is also a widely know processer, not many people know about AMD because its not popular amongst computers. Go with the Core 2 Duo E6420.
