Johnny Cash did the most famous one in 1996. In the USA the original country version was recorded in late 1962 by Grand Ole Opry star Hank Snow, which is I believe the version you hear on that ad.

don't know about or what telstra adverts is, but many artists sang this song and one comes to mind is the late Hank Snow (a country western singer)

The original is Hank Snow, but Johnny Cash remade it a hit and now its used on some motel commercials.
