I think he is too controversial to be knighted. If anything he brought the subject of Islam to the west and maybe that is a good thing, however he also brought the tension of the belief forward. Therefore his knighthood will do nothing to improve matters.

Salman Rushdie has a great body of work that is highly regarded through out the world. It is a shame that just one book is thought to represent him.
If it is decided that a the Queen of Britain should award a British Citizen a Knighthood it has nothing to do with Pakistan.
If a British Muslim has a complaint they are free to voice their complaint. That is what makes Britain great. The Freedom to speak.
Not the freedom to be stoned to death after a Sharia Court hearing because someone said something that someone else did not like.

Do oany of them deserve to be knighted? I have nothing against him but he has been well rewarded for what he does, I think Ian Botham is brilliant but does he deserve to be knighted as well as all the other reward he has had over the years? Elton John (especially him), Cliff Richard ..... let's carry on. None of them deserve it, they get it for being celebrity basically. They do no more in the context of their chosen career than many ordinary people do in theirs but the best they can hope for is a minor gong and that is as rare as hens teeth. These awards have lost their meaning and value, they should honour those people who dedicate their lives and time to the greater good but don't get millions and privelige along the way.

I agree with you that Knighthood should be for special people who have done something great to their country. They must command respect of people. Some people who have answered your question have read his work. Award appears to be questionable.
I have not read his work. I have no grudge against the man and wanted to see him healthy and prosperous. May God help him to follow the right path so that he may have good image in the eyes of people.

I think he has not done a great job for humanity, I agree that he has created trouble all over the world.
Generally, elits are thanked by people where in his case millions of muslim hate him.
There are some moral writers and scientists who deserve such an honour.

On the scales: other people have received knighthoods for something strange. They were talking about David Bekenham. Just shows what it has come to. There isn't any logic to it

I don't know. I have not read any of his books.
Why? I am too frightened that I might get arrested for inciting racial and religious violence.
Is it legal to read the Satanic Verses on a train in London?
Where can I get a copy? It seems to be a banned book like 'The Windsors' by Kitty Kelly.

His ONE book (which isn't even his best, I think) stirred up trouble with one Muslim ignoramus who unfortunately holds sway with a lot of other Muslims.
If you read some of his other books, you will understand what beautiful writing he does. I think he deserves a knighthood more than some of those rock-stars the poor Queen has decided to knight.
People's Award is a bad idea. Can you imagine, say the Nobel Prize, being judged by the people? The inventor of the iPod might win it.

It just seems like a ploy to revive an issue (the fatwa/sentence placed upon rushdie by iran) which had almost died down......mind you rushdie might be great writer in his own right.....but as the author of the question stated there are others far better than him....why should he deserve a knighthood?......it looks like an effort to provoke the muslim world with an extinct issue....isn't there enuff turnoil in the islamic world already? was this necessary?......

He is an Islamophobic man...
It is like awarding somebody who is racist towards black/white people...
As a Muslim, I don't have problems with books such as Da Vinci because it has facts and it is fictional but Mr Rushdie wrote his book in order to attack Islam and his book was purely based on his opinions and fantasise, there were no facts in that book...
Saying all that, I am surprised he is still alive, ohh well, I am sure it is not too long till he is gone...
