... you think that you have worked 150% and done a good job, and then the phone rings and your boss asks, nicely "I wonder if you had time to do this OTHER thing we discussed last week..." He is lucky that I like him, or I would chop his head off!

Thing is, I worked until 11pm to finish what he asked!

Thanks all for the sympathy. I have finished the manuscript in the meantime! The prof. made me laugh because (although he did not have way to knowing this) my boss will be on call all week-end (he is a medic) and there are chances that we'll work together at the Grant Applications... Just as well I can't say no to him...(too charming... ;) )

Yes, everybody hates that. But not everybody is willing to put some extra/unpaid effort into their job. I think you have to draw the line, and I just suspect that the fact you like your boss might be in the way. This is not to say you'd be better off in a less human working atmosphere, only that you should show you'd prefer your efforts to be respected instead of taken for granted. Somehow, this has always been easier if the relation is purely professional, at least to me.
On the other hand, I love my job so much that I can be an easy target for any employer who would wish to abuse this obvious trait in me; that's why I had to develop other defense mechanisms, such as establishing and maintaining the safe distance.

Hi, When a boss gets a good hard working employee they will work you like a horse and will never pay you for your extra time. I know this because that's what happen to me and now i can no longer work.I drawn s.s.d.i because of that little extra work (if you want to say,a little extra) You will get to a point that you will have to say something to your boss,or just chop his head off!! Lol..

Yep, it's enough to give a person a break down some days. But it's definitely a good thing he depends on you. That's job security. Of course, the more you do, the more he will come to expect you to do. It's no good!

Yeah that sucks.

Try working real hard on doing something your boss said and then she turns around the next day and yells at you for not doing it.

My boss is such a basket-case....

if there is no punch card to punch in /out your time at work then go buy one/or a few so you can turn in your time at the end of your pay period,...clip a note to it ...40 hrs=what ever...add the hrs you put in over the hrs you put in and that you expect extra pay for the time you [sacrificed ],or demand a salary that you think is fair, or leave the job ,but not before you ask him for a letter of reference ,this sometimes does the trick, but sometimes it works against you ,be wise ...

Call him tomorrow and say that since you keep doing such a great job at these little extra things he keeps asking you to do that you need this one extra raise.
