Has anyone taken an amtrak trip for leisure? Say from the Bay Area to Reno/Tahoe or other places? If so, is it a comfortable trip? Do you recommend it for families? What is the cost?

I've taken my kids to LA. We had a family room ( $400) and they thought it was great. I also took one child in a sleeping car SF - Denver (36 hours). It was also a great trip. I have travelled by myself just in a seat and met a lot of really nice people. I love the dining cars. The best meal I ever had was on the Coast Starlighter at sunset. The food was good, not great, but the view of the sun setting over the ocean on a clear day was incredible.

Four years ago my husband and I went from Eugene, Oregon to Seattle on Amtrak. We loved it!! Very comfortable and you can get up and walk to a different car. The one we rode on had an observation car. That was fun. I would take a family (depending on the ages of course) but I can't say what the cost would be. You would have to call a travel agency or Amtrak for that and also where Amtrak goes. They do go to Reno, but I'm not sure about Tahoe. If you decided to try it---Have Fun!!!

PS I was born and raised on Bay View Ave. in Richmond. Hear it's changed a lot down there.

i have taken the train from boston to new york city on the express train. About a 5 hour trip. Totally worth it if you get the slightly more expensive tickets for reserved seats. I have also gone fro Martinez to Riverside. Which is a nice all day long trip, but it take 4 hours to get through just the Bay Area.

The train is very fun with kids. especially the car with the skylights. And it is nice to not have to worry about driving and gas. I think the boston trip was like $85 or 90. check amtrack.com for pricing.

I've done the Starlighter, just to see the beauty of the coast. It's comfy, and there are always families on board. Bring your own food, as the food line is always packed. The round trip (from Emeryville) would be about $100.
