I want to convert wave files to mp3, but I have tried river fast, and smartsoft. Is there any good free wave converters out there that I can download?

Audacity.

You can do a lot of things with it. And after downloading the Lame codec (avaible on the same site as Audacity), you can encode mp3s.

You can check out EAC (Exact Audio Copy) at

http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

You will also need the lame converter to make mp3 files, All you need to do is download from lame.sourceforge.net and copy the files to the EAC directory. For configuring lame, please search for tutorials on the net. It's quite technical but ready resources are available (you can copy and paste the configs).

In the beginning you may have to spend some time to configure it. But after that is done just enjoy. You will get the best results for your pains.
