I don't know about the company/event that you mentioned, but I do know that if they ask you for money upfront, saying they need to make a portfolio and YOU have to pay for pics, photographers and other costs. Then RUN!! If they want you, you shouldn't have to pay for money upfront.

Are you speaking of a specific model search? You can check out the credibility easily by going to the Better Business Bureau. If you are asked for money up front, that's a sign to be wary. If they say you need photos, go to a professional with accreditation. Be careful of people promoting their own photogs whose work is questionable at the very least. NEVER GO TO A MODEL AUDITION ALONE AT NIGHT AT A HOTEL, MOTEL OR DESERTED LOCATION. Always tell at least two other people where you are going and check in with them when you get out of the interview. You can't be too careful. If the "model searcher" wants to take photos of you, DO NOT consent to shots with no clothing. Use your head and common sense. If this is a setup of some kind, trust your instincts. Take someone with you and dress with professionalism. If you look trashy, it will only cause offers of a nature that may be of no interest. Be careful of people seeking prostitutes or porn stars.

Other than that, good luck.
