how do I make everything open up with fire fox instead of internet explorer?

it is the default browser, but some programs make IE open instead. I have IE emulation on firefox. I want to know how to force every program to use only firefox, and never IE.

eg windows live...windows update...media player..

just open firefox and use it to open whatever you want it to open.

First of all set firefox as your default browser if it isn't already.

1) Open firefox, and go to Tools-> Options.

2) Make sure your in the Main tab.

3)In the Main Tab , you will see a 'system defaults' section. Under that 'check the box' 'Always check to see if firefox is the default browser on startup. and hit OK.

4)Close firefox and start it again, it should give you a prompt asking you to make it as your default browser, just hit Yes

5) that is it, now firefox is your default browser.

Alternatively , in the main tab under Options in the system defaults section, click on the button which says 'check now' ...it'll prompt you to select firefox as default browser if it isn't already, just hit Yes.

However most microsoft products will open their links with IE and not with what is set as your default browser. Although, you can alter this behaviour with the help of certain plugins.

If you have WLM I don't think its possible anymore to open links on wlm with a browser other than IE. There used to be a way, using the messenger plus and stuffplug extension with MSN. But with WLM there doesn't seem a way.

However, you can try if you want to. First, install the messenger plus live extension ( http://www.msgpluslive.net/ ) for your WLM, now get the stuffplug extension from http://www.stuffplug.com/

Once you have both the add-ons installed, restart WLM. Now with FF (Firefox) your default browser, see if launching the links will open in FF. If not, then click plus menu -> preferences -> plugins -> stuffplug -> configure . Here you'll find the option. If you use older WLM , that is MSN, the above trick might work for you.

For windows update you can use IE tab extension for firefox, and also try this: http://windowsupdate.62nds.com and also this: http://yellow5.us/firefox/windowsupdate/ if it suits you.

when you start fire fox, it ask you if you want that to be the default web browser. if you clicked no and its not coming up, click on tools and options in firefox, under the general tab there should be check if firefox is the default browser, check now and make the decision.

Certain programs will open IE, like update, msn...

To start you need to set Firefox as your default browser. Next you need to change all your file associations to open with Firefox. You can either do this through the control panel or you can right click each program type and select 'open with' 'other'. Select Firefox in the popup menu and check the box at the bottom to always open this file type with this program.

Warning Microsoft sites will not work with anything but IE.

In Firefox, go to Tools, options, and check the box at the bottom that says "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser."

That should make sure windows uses it to open and web links.

Go into the Tools>Options menu in FireFox, there should be a setting in one of the tabs that will make FireFox your defualt Web Browser.
