Don't worry...sometimes you can see the heartbeat this early, but a lot of women don't see the heartbeat until between 6 and 8 weeks. At my 5 week scan we didn't even see a yolk sac! We saw the yolk sac 3 days later and the heartbeat at 6 weeks, 4 days.

I am surprised that some doctor's don't explain these things to their patients. Just hang in there until your next ultrasound.

I don't know how often it happens, but the same thing happened to me. I went for an ultra-sound to find out how far along I was at the start of this pregnancy, and they couldn't find a heart beat. I had an internal ultrasound and the heartbeat was easily seen. Maybe you could ask to have that done? I was 6 weeks at the time and I'm now 37 weeks, so it doesnt mean anything bad, I wouldnt worry about it. :)

I am staggered at the number of women who come on here and ask questions like this.

Don't the doctors or technicians explain anything to you while they are doing the exam?

Next time - ASK. It's your body, your pregnancy and your baby.

As for your question - it's very normal not to see a heartbeat at this very early point but you didn't mention what sort of ultrasound exam you had (transabdominal or transvaginal).

Seriously - it's going to be a very long 8 months if your caregivers don't tell you anything and you aren't game to ask. Doctors and midwives are seriously used to being asked endless questions - it's not a big deal to us as we understand how unique this experience is for most women. Because we deal with it day in day out we sometimes forget to explain the detail - so ask us!

Sometimes it's hard to see the heartbeat that early on. I wouldn't say it's normal...it's not like it happens every time...but I definitely know women whose doctors couldn't find the heartbeat in the first month or so and then waited, never started bleeding, and went back to the doctor for the next appointment and found the heartbeat no problem. Try not to stress too much, because that certainly won't help. Good luck.

It is highly unusual to detect a heartbeat at 5 weeks - sometimes even transvaginal ultrasounds won't pick it up.

Usually it can be detected by ultrasound by 6-7 weeks, or by a doppler around 10-13 weeks. If doc was concerned, they would have made another appointment to have an ultrasound.

Yeah, normally you don't see the heartbeat at 5 weeks...its very normal it should show up between 10-14 weeks at least. So it shouldnt be a huge concern...especially if the doctor didnt tell you to be concerened...but at 5 weeks its normal to not see the heartbeat.

This is quite normal for a five week fetus. Usually it is undetected until at least this time.
