so did u varnish over this to protect it? If not, there's u'r answer.... if u want a gloss ..use acrylic gloss or semi-gloss (depending on how mch shine u want) varnish. So it will serve 2 purposes... it will protect the toy box from over the yrs & it will give u that shine.

After applying thousands of gallons of paint in my time, IF the satin is latex, and the NEW finish coat is Latex, then you don't need sanding or priming. Those would be wasted steps and expense. I notice you don't state the substance of the orig. satin.

Any decent paint store would be able to show you various GLOSS sections for you to mull over. Depending on a color preference there are high gloss and semi available, even in a more durable Kitchen Cabinet type gloss.

Certainly you CAN clear coat it, though I wouldn't use Varnish. Also you can assume it's purpose, and your thought about its use and aesthetics. It is after all a box to hold toys, and for children, so you might assume some bumps and grinds.

Use Semi-gloss. It is the glossy paint used in kitchens and bathrooms and easily cleaned! You can paint it right over the satin you already used too.

Not sure if there's any difference in weight regarding liquid and dry paint.

You will need to give the surface a light sanding before applying anything else.

You need a compatible top coat so see your paint shop to see what he recommends.
