Many, many times, the ONLY way you can truly be a friend is to be tough. Of course you can be both. "Nice" doesn't mean "weak" or "submissive". It means treating people with respect and decency, as you would want to be treated. And, many times, you have to be pretty tough to be able to do that, in the face of social pressure to be otherwise.

yes, dear
every interaction you have with another involves 2 people, not just you. And there's a dance of act/react with the different personalities we know.
It's very normal to be perceived differently by different people. Just realize that every label they give you is never the whole truth.

Yes you can be both. I am. I think our families we deal with in a less" nicer" way then we do others. Try to be more kinder when giving your opinions, or be who you are and let them think what they want. If your a good person and know it, don't change. Every one else always thinks they are right .there not.

I teach business classes at a college in NYC. Believe me, tough and nice can be done. In my case, I try to present myself as 90% Mr. Rogers, 10% Mr. T. I have unshakable faith in my students' abilities to excel at college and in their careers, but I PITY THE FOOL who thinks otherwise.

YES!! you can ! just be firm and assertive and tact full. Remember how would you want someone to talk to you and do the same. Besides you'll get alot more respect that way just don't be rude and cruel you don't want people to close you out.

Yes! Being nice is one part of who you are, and being tough is just another part of who you are. Great Question!!!
