Importance in academics? None. Importance in self-satisfaction and fun? Much!

Being bilingual is a blast, and can be very useful. If you were to ask, I would recommend taking all the French you can in high school, extending it a bit in college, and using it as much as possible in day-to-day life.

It will show persistence on your resume for college. Also, many schools offer AP (advanced placement) language courses for which you can get college credit while still in high school. This gives you a head start and indicates to college recruiters that you're a cut above many of your fellow students. But French is still spoken in many countries and it's fun to travel and be fluent in another language. The fourth year is actually fun, since you've learned the grammar and now really use the language as it was meant to be used.
