Hi, there is a mirror closet door in my apartment that had gotten cracked due to moving furniture in. I am able to get it fixed for cheap so that it doesn't get taken from my security deposit. My question is, am i entitled to go ahead with the repairs or is there any kind of regulation against that? Do I have to tell my landlord? I am moving out soon and need quick responses. Thank you in advance!

Check your lease contract. A few landlords will not allow personal repairs, simply because they don't trust the quality of the repair. However, if this is not prohibited contractually, you can repair the damage yourself, as long as you do it in a good workmanlike manner, using materials of equal or better quality than what was originally used.

As far as I know that in your rental agreement should state if damages are done by the renter that you are responsible for the repair. I personally manage a building and I would not tell the landlord and go ahead and get it done from your pocket so you can keep your deposit as it is. If you tell your landlord he will charge you for it and be more expensive. But read your rental agreement and then make your choice....good luck

It sounds like this was an accident and closet doors are not very expensive. I would let my landlord know that I had this accident and also present a repair note showing your good intention to fix the minor damage you caused. This is acceptable in the court of law. Good luck.
