Depends on what your doing..
AMD athlon X2 for games
Intel Core 2 duo for work
I own a AMD athlon x2 6000+ (3.0GHz per core) -I love it

They are very similar. I doubt you could tell the difference actually running applications. I think people are just more confident of the name Intel.
Look to the other features of the computer to make the decision, things that can't be changed easily like screen size, a fast hard drive (7200rpm or faster), video card, etc. These can have a major inpact on the speed as well.

Core2 Duo is better but AMD64 X2 are cheap. BUT then, there's the cheap and new Pentium E2140/E2160 that's based on Core2 Duo technology. More here:

A good indication of which processor is better can be their clock speed (measured in Mhz or Ghz). the higher the better generally (it gets more complicated with Dual Core processors)

I think intel duel core processor is the best one. you can find more options in core 2 processor.

But the only negative point bout C2D is the price ..
AMD X2 is much cheaper .
