During deep sleep, metabolic processes are slowed down slightly. Excretion of fluids also is delayed to a limited extent. Areas around the eyes are loose tissues and waste products in tissue fluids make the eyes look swollen. This phenomenon is also seen in early nephrotic syndrome. Wakefulness excretes the fluid.
