You have to decide that for yourself. I have know families of a couple and a child who lived happily in 800 sq feet not wishing for more space.
My old house was 1140 sq ft and the family before me raised 4 children there.
To give you an idea of the size of 1140 sq ft the living room held a couch and love seat, the dinning room a table for 6, a average sized kitchen and three bedrooms two small one that held a king sized bed and a dresser and two tiny bathrooms.
The advantages to a small house are it is cheaper to heat, cheaper to roof and cheaper to carpet. The disadvantage was if you put in a Christmas tree you couldn't invite more than about 6 people for Christmas.
