What type of food do the Astronauts take while on a space mission? Do they carry enough food stocks with them to last the entire period of their stay/exploration in outer space and will such food withstand the conditions there?

The shuttle astronauts take many common foods with them into space such as hot dogs, soup, and turkey slices, etc. They surely bring enough food to last the entire mission. Their food is freeze-dried and much of it can be rehydrated with water. Their food is packaged similar to the way the U.S. Army packages their MREs (Meals-Ready-to-Eat). You can buy these packaged foods at Army-Navy Surplus stores. They are fun to eat.

1. They eat normally, but all the food is freeze-dried, and they can't eat ice cream. 2. The waste is sucked up and freeze dried till they re-enter Earth. 3. It varies on the missions they are doing. 4. Manned space expedition, it is Soyuz TM-18 5. It varies from the time in space, but usually not very. The astronauts still exercise in space so they do not forget how to walk, or their muscles forget how to function.

They take enough to last the whole time. It is kind of like camping food. Preserved so that it will last without a refrigerator. They get fresh food with each supply mission, but the fresh food must be eaten withing a few days. After that, it is camping food. You can even buy it on-line yourself.

I really don't know: may be it's the secret of the century. We know that there is no BBQ, no ice cream, no hamburger, no french fries, no vegetables or fruits, no coca cola or sweet beverage and that Astronauts must keep it secret. The truth is that it is processed somewhere in outer space, the foods on earth being not safe for alien or man.

Food preservation is not a problem for the duration of space flights up to those taken so far.
