If the vehicle's in her name, all you can do is state that you were on good terms with her at the time of taking the vehicle for use. And that at some point she decided to change her mind about you using it.

If the vehicle's in your name or both your names---you have every right to take the vehicle and use it in any manner you see fit.

Hire a lawyer and have for them to arrange for the return of the vehicle to the ex, or the financier if she has defaulted on the loan. It may be a bit costly, but better than spending time in jail as they can plead that it is a domestic dispute gone awry and you had no knowledge that you did not have permission to use the vehicle.

If picked up/stopped with the vehicle in your possession, you could be charged with Grand Theft Auto, which is a felony and the sentance would depend on the States involved.

are you listed on the car loan? are you listed on the insurance? did you have written permission from the ex to drive the car?

turning yourself in is a good idea because that way you are being arrested at your convience. BUT contact a bond company ( or a few to see who will bond you in another state and who can't / won't) and have the bond fee money ready so you can get out quicker.

then tell the truth and cross your fingers that they take your story over hers.

Tough question. There's really not much you can do except pay the charge, unfortunately. Big Brother is not an easy fellow.
